Some of the texting issues might be fixed with something that has a keyboard, like a Blackberry. I also wonder if a physical car GPS would solve the need to print out directions

what you can't text with t9 predictive text? I can probably type faster that way. I used to be able to text without even looking at the phone.

I'm going to take this challenge next month. I invested in a flip phone last fall and did a 3 week challenge. I noticed how much more productive I was and my communication with people was better. Before I had a smart phone . My social and person life was very physically focused . I had better communication with people and was more productive in my life . Far as posting photos to social media, I used to carry around a digital camera , and uploaded pictures to my social media outlets. I used to use map quest to get around, but I invested in a Garmin gps and it's fantastic especially when I travel. Overall I miss the pause I had from the world wide web and technology. Im hoping to be more productive with myself and people around me .

The convenience features don't come at a cost of happiness, social media and the news are the only two things that need be avoided and then a smartphone is great all of a sudden.

2:35 - Master T9. I've been using T9 back in the day, and I tried the 30-day challenge again recently - texting was troublesome for the first few text but later in the day, I was blowing up people's phones again. It is a knack, but with anything, just a little practice and you'll fly through it. NEVER NEVER try the TAP, TAP, TAP = A, TAP TAP B, etc... you will crawl up the wall!!!! so I would say from personal experience (lots), texting is not really a roadblock on flips! (and other dumb phones) And there are macros (or default texts you can send) also, you can keep notes on most flip phones, however, since you have crippled your thinking on texting LOL, you will always be limited with a flip. T9 baby!! work it!!

A good read is a book, yes a paper copy called Digital Cocaine by Brad Huddleston. Explains why we think we have to have a smartphone, consequences behind exposure for too long, in part a smartphone works on the same receptors of the brain that Cocaine does!!. Maybe our parents telling us as kids that our eyes will go square from watching too much TV had merit. Setting up guardrails is good, but the memories on your phone from photos don't and never can replace real life.

You could have bought a navigation device for your car. Also, you can still text most people on a Mac or an Ipad. I am switching to a flip phone this week. I have no intention of going back to a smart phone. I plan on using an Ipad and my Mac to facetime with friends and family. At least I won't be on the smart phone when I am away from home. I am purchasing a separate GPS navigational device for the car. Thanks for the video.

The answer is what the Buddhist refer to as the middle path. It’s not about the extreme of going without. Simply keep your smartphone (iPhone) as long as possible even after it’s made obsolete . You may not get security updates from Apple but if you use gmail app and browser they should still be safe.

When I went to a flip as much as texting was horrible it forces you to call to respond to people because you didn't want to type out a response. It would actually make people weird being like why are you calling ? We now would rather text or as you said reply with email vs verbal communication.

Who needs a beautiful compact phone when you can buy a map, calculator, GPS, camera, dumbphone, etc? That's how minimalism works, right?...right? It's just like the nofap cult. Blaming all of your problems on something instead of accepting the truth that you lack self control. Stop being technophobic, it's 2021.

I'm thinking of getting a flip phone! In light of the hiccups you encountered, I plan on getting a physical GPS for my car and a small digital camera. And for notes, a little notepad to keep in my bag. The switch is probably easier for a woman because we can keep little things like that in our purse! Thanks for the video, this is a great concept & who knows maybe you'll revisit it someday!

I feel like a lot of these should be less about how bad technology is, and more about how important self control is. You can have the conveniences of a smart phone without it making you unhappy, just stop being so invested in the worrying things you get out of your phone. Turn off notification for everything but the necessary stuff, get off social media, etc. Now you can have google maps and improve yourself.

really the only practice someone like you would need to practice stillness would be to eat food without any distractions. Since your social and work life depends on you using your smartphone and computer, to practice feeling still, only real thing to do is eat while focusing on the food. So no videos no nothing while eating food and all focus on the chewing. Honestly, just this practice makes you feel calm throughout the day. Too much multitasking leads to stress is what I have noticed.
